Yes, I hadn't known much about the Jesuits until
then. And I remember that a group of us used to meet for daily
prayers at the little chapel on the B.C. campus. That and the
St. Francis Xavier Novena of Grace each year were what led me
to keep the Jesuits in the back of my mind. So I finally went
to the Jesuit superior at B.C. and said, "I want to go into the
priesthood." And he said, "Where?" I said, "The Jesuits." That's
when a big smile showed on his face, because, as he later explained,
that particular year there were only fifteen candidates for the
Jesuits, when in previous years there were generally thirty or
so applicants.
When I came back to Weston/Campion in 1978, the
house looked out of date. So one of the first things I did was
to put a telephone next to each bed and on each desk. The old
system was bulky; it had come from Navy surplus and from the Boston
subway system. I got rid of all of that outdated equipment. We
gave them to a museum and to a school. Just then a big downtown
store was in the process of closing. So I was able to buy the
telephone system and set it up here at Campion. Managing that
kind of thing was my main responsibility in that house at that
time.
